Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal safely and permanently removes unwanted hair without damaging the delicate pores and structures of the skin. The laser passes harmlessly through the skin and selectively targets and treats the hair follicles.

The laser works by disabling hair follicles that are actively producing hair at the time of treatment. Because only a certain amount of hairs are in the growing phase at one time, repeat sessions will be necessary to treat the other follicles as they enter the early growth phase. The number of treatments required can also depend upon your skin color and coarseness of the hair. Darker hair responds better than lighter hair. Everyone will require at least 2 to 3 treatments. To achieve complete permanent hair removal most people will require 5 treatments.

In our office we utilize the GentleLASE to remove hair. This laser's wave length selectively targets the hair while minimizing damage to the epidermis. The skin is further protected during treatment by a Dynamic Cooling Device TM where a cool burst is sprayed onto the skin cooling the upper layers and providing patients with increased comfort.

1. Avoid getting a tan on the area to be treated.
2. If using Vaniqa (a cream used to slow hair regrowth), this should be discontinued 6
   weeks prior to treatment.
3. If you tend to get cold sores or herpes in the area to be treated prophylactic
medication should be taken prior to the treatment
4. If interested in topical anesthesia, arrangements should be made so the anesthesia
can be applied 30 minutes prior to the procedure.

What to expect the day of treatment:

Depending on the amount of hair treated, the procedure varies from patient to patient. Generally, the treatment will include: Wearing safety eyewear to protect the practitioner and patient's eyes from the laser light during the procedure. A small hand piece will be used that lightly touches the skin to deliver the laser light. A light spray of coolant onto the skin will be felt just before each laser pulse. A test area will be done prior to the entire treatment. Your full treatment may be done on the same day or up to two weeks later, depending on the skin reaction. Most patients experience little discomfort at the treatment site because of the dynamic cooling device. The degree of discomfort varies with each person, depending on his/her pain threshold.

The procedure can take as little as 10 minutes or up to an hour, depending on the area treated. Facial and bikini areas are usually completed in less than ten minutes; legs, backs and larger areas can take longer.

The treated area may become pink or red within 30 minutes of treatment; this may last from a few hours to several days and is relieved with the application of ice or cooling gels. Patients should avoid tanning the treated area and should wear sunscreen if exposed to the sun.
